A question that is asked a lot about cruising, is "what is best, an Ocean or River Cruise?" Hopefully this page will help you make up your mind!
I’ve been lucky enough to experience both ocean and river cruises, and the truth is, they each have a completely different feel. I’ve sailed on both Caribbean and Mediterranean ocean cruises, as well as a Danube river cruise, and each offered something unique.
There’s no right or wrong choice; it really comes down to what kind of trip you’re looking for, and the places you want to see.
When booking, you can pick the cabin type that you want on both ocean and river cruises and what drinks package you would prefer.
When onboard, both are normally on a cashless basis, so you need a debit or credit card to settle any additional expenses and bills.
Ocean cruises are all about variety and entertainment. The ships themselves feel like floating resorts, with something happening at all times. There are normally thousands of people on board at one time, due to large size of the ships.
Depending on the cruise line and ship you choose, you can expect:
• Broadway style shows and live entertainment
• Casinos
• Water slides and pools
• Nightclubs, bars, and themed nights
• Multiple restaurants and dining options
Excursions are usually well organised, but it’s worth noting that ports can be near a beach, a city centre, or sometimes a bit further out, meaning you may need to walk or take a coach to reach the main attractions. Normally, you have to pay extra for excursions and can book prior or during your cruise.
When it comes to what to wear, ocean cruises can range from very casual to quite glamorous. Some ships still host Captain’s Balls or formal nights, while others are much more relaxed, it really depends on the cruise line you choose.
Ocean cruises also offer a wide range of excursions, from sightseeing tours to private beach days and adventure experiences, giving you plenty of choice at each stop.
River cruising has a much calmer and more relaxed feel. It’s less about onboard entertainment and more about the destinations and scenery. One of the biggest differences is the view, you’re not looking out at open ocean, but watching villages, vineyards, and historic towns drift by. It’s fascinating and incredibly peaceful.
On my Danube river cruise, almost every stop was within walking distance of the city centre or close to public transport like a subway. You could easily:
Explore on your own
Join an organised walking tour
Take a coach excursion if preferred.
There’s no strict dress code, casual and comfortable is the norm. Food is excellent, though on a smaller scale than ocean cruises, with fewer dining venues but beautifully prepared meals.
Entertainment isn’t comparable to ocean cruises, but that’s part of the charm. You can head to the top deck, relax with a cocktail or beer, and just enjoy the scenery going by.
Another big plus is the relaxed security. Unlike ocean cruises, where you go through security checks every time you reboard, river cruising feels far more seamless.
River cruises are also more intimate. With fewer passengers, you really get to know the crew and your fellow travellers, which adds to the overall experience. Watching the dock system in action, how ships line up and adjust, is surprisingly fascinating too.
• Ocean Cruises:
• Often offer multiple dining venues
• Drinks packages are usually optional and can add to the cost
• Tipping is sometimes added daily or prepaid.
• River Cruises:
• Dining is more streamlined but high quality
• Drinks (wine, beer, soft drinks) are often included with meals but read the T&C’s so you know beforehand.
• Tipping is usually clearer, sometimes included or handled at the end.
There’s a common myth that cruises are expensive, but when you actually weigh up what’s included, they can be incredible value.
Think about it:
• Accommodation
• Transport between destinations
• Food
• Entertainment
• Many excursions
If you compared that to a package holiday, especially one that doesn’t include multiple destinations, daily meals, or entertainment, the costs quickly add up.
• Choose an ocean cruise if you love entertainment, variety, and a lively atmosphere.
• Choose a river cruise if you prefer relaxed travel, cultural cities, scenic views, and an intimate feel.
Or better yet… try both!
I love ocean and river cruising. They are different, however, both give you the freedom on how much, or little you want to do. You get the chance to visit different destinations without lifting heavy baggage, and you do not have to move to different hotels to get there.
